It takes about 4 years to become a teacher. Generally they have a decent enough salary and benefits, but teachers certainly don’t get rich on their salaries. Many tradespeople and professionals make more money that teachers. Salaries differ a great deal state to state, province to province, and country to country.
The amount of time off is very misleading — they have a huge amount of after hours work to do, are often expected to participate in extra-curricular activities without pay, and have to do courses for upgrading and renewing their certificates in the summer. So if you want to be a teacher by all means do so. It is a rewarding career. However, doing it for the perks might not be such a good idea.
In my opinion it is a calling and a vocation rather than just a job. The benefits are usually good, especially if you work for a public school. The pay, unfortunately, is not so good. Teachers need a minmum of a bachelor’s degree. Some states also require master’s degrees and public schools require teaching certifications.
You will not have time for other things. When you’re not in the classroom, you’re grading papers and making your lesson plans.
